Simply Modern Water Bottle Review: Is It Worth the Purchase?

Simply Modern is a company that began in 2015 and according to their website, “offers premium quality products and unique styles for adults and kids at generous prices.” When you peruse their website, you see they really have a ton of products, mostly liquid-related in some way, from kids’ water bottles, coffee travel mugs, water bottles, as well as barware and travel bags. Their company is known for the large amount of giving they provide to various social causes, as well as their trendy, “modern” products. I had seen that the Simply Modern water bottle was one of the top-selling water bottles on Amazon, so I wanted to try it out and give my own Simply Modern water bottle review.

The version I bought was a 34oz water bottle, the Mesa Bottle with Simple Flip Filter Straw Lid, to be exact, so slightly larger than some of the other ones I’ve tried before. Simply Modern has a variety of sizes, so you can pretty much get the size you’re looking for, but I really ended up liking this larger size. The first thing I noticed about this water bottle was how heavy it was. This bottle would, as a result, probably not be for younger kids, at least not the 34oz one I bought, as it’d likely be too heavy for them. For myself though, I really liked how solid it was.

According to their website, this bottle is made with double walled stainless steel. I much prefer stainless steel water bottles to the plastic ones, as I’m trying to avoid microplastics and other toxins that can leak from the plastic of bottles into the water. From what I’ve researched, even the tougher plastic ones that are labeled as “BPA-free” don’t guarantee that no harmful chemicals could be leaked into the water from them.

When I took this water bottle out of its package, I found that not only was the bottle itself sturdy, but the lid and mouthpiece was pretty sturdy as well. This is a major plus, since I can’t tell you how many water bottles we’ve had to get rid of due to a broken lid. This particular water bottle also includes a carbon filter, so that is included in a package in the bottle. Now, what do carbon filters filter out, you should ask? Well, I’ve never been very good at science or chemistry so I won’t attempt to go into the details of how it works, but carbon filters, also known as activated carbon (AC) filters, are considered to be effective at removing organic compounds from water and largely removing chlorine also. They can reduce, though not eliminate completely, lead and other metals. It will also NOT remove most bacteria, viruses, fluoride, or nitrates. What does this mean for you? Well, as always, consider your own water filtering needs, as well as your water bottle needs and preferences in general. Consider your water source and the elements you are particularly concerned with having removed. A carbon filter will generally improve the smell and taste of the water, so maybe that’s enough for you too.

As a major plus, however, the Simply Modern Mesa water bottle comes with not only the filter straw but a regular straw as well that can be used. This is a win as far as I’m concerned, since I already have a filter at home and so don’t personally need the AC filter. Having the option between the AC straw and the regular straw is a big plus. See the picture below:

Here are my Pros and Cons.

PROS:

-            Stainless steel. This allows you to avoid any potentially hazardous chemicals from leaking into your water. And it’s sturdy as a result also.

-            Variations in size, etc. The Simply Modern portfolio gives you plenty to choose from, from different sizes of bottles, to different colors, including ones with your favorite sports team displayed on the bottle.

-            Stylish look. I just like the look of this bottle. “Trendy” is the term, I believe.

-            Helping good causes. Purchasing a Simply Modern water bottle not only helps you, but also helps the causes the organization supports, which includes stopping homelessness, ending human trafficking, and providing clean water around the world.

-            The option of filter straw and regular straw. As I said above, this is nice so that if you already have a different (or better) filtering system at home you can choose to just use the regular straw. Or, if you’re out and about you can choose to use the carbon filter straw when you fill up at a drinking fountain or wherever.

CONS:

-            Limitations of carbon filter. This may not be a negative for you, as was explained above, but for most people they are going to have things such as fluoride and other contaminants in their water that a carbon filter just won’t fully help with, in which case they’re going to want a better filter. This is really the only con. Again, it’s all about what you’re wanting this bottle to do for you.
